Spellcasting Rates

To use a spellcasting rate you must have levels in a class that allows spellcasting rates, as well as a class that the former class is allowed to use the spells from. For example if a Paladin wants to use Cleric spells, they must have levels in both Paladin and Cleric.

This can apply retroactively. A level 6 paladin already has paladin spells. But if that paladin takes a Cleric level at level 7, they may chose to give up their paladin spells to gain a bonus to their Cleric Spell levels. In this case, a level 6 paladin would grant +2 to the Cleric’s spellcasting progression, allowing them to cast spells as a 3rd level Cleric.
